Amec Foster Wheeler Environment & Infrastructure is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in our Portland, Maine office. The work will involve subsurface investigations, laboratory testing, engineering design, and construction oversight. The Amec Foster Wheeler Portland, Maine Office is a multi-disciplinary science/engineering/architecture team of 150+ staff that offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects for a wide range of clients throughout the US.
Key Responsibilities The ideal candidate will have a solid background in geotechnical engineering as well as excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will be a proactive problem solver. This position offers the opportunity to lead geotechnical designs from preliminary investigations to final design documents, interact with clients and senior staff in Portland and other Amec Foster Wheeler offices, contribute to the growth of the geotechnical group, and mentor junior engineering staff while executing the following roles/responsibilities: •Conduct evaluation and design related tasks including slope stability analyses, settlement and bearing capacity evaluations for shallow and deep foundations and surcharges, permanent and temporary excavation support measures, earth retaining structures, landfill caps, seepage and piping evaluations, and vertical hydraulic barriers •Prepare design drawings and specifications, bidding documents, and construction summary documents •Review contractor/vendor bids and provide recommendations to clients •Plan, conduct and implement geotechnical and environmental field investigations, including directing drilling and excavation contractors •Prepare geotechnical investigation reports in support of design and construction projects •Interact with clients, project managers, regulatory agencies and other design discipline staff to present and defend recommendations •Manage and oversee drilling, earthwork, and construction activities •Travel to monitor construction, meet clients, and/or visit sites in support of design and construction for both short-term and long-term field assignments
Skills / Qualifications Required •BS in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering •15+ years of civil design and construction experience with a focus on geotechnical engineering, subsurface investigation, and design and earthwork construction •Professional Engineering License in one state •Experience in preparing and implementing contract construction documents •Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills •Demonstrated professional judgment, consistency and attention to detail •Strong computer skills •Ability and willingness to travel to project sites •Adaptability and willingness to adjust to client needs •Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required •Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy
Preferred •MS in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering •Professional Engineering licensure in multiple states •Geo-environmental experience related to contamination assessment and remedial construction •Drilling oversight experience •Construction inspection/oversight and/or construction management experience •Experience with design-build projects •Experience with integration of structural and geotechnical components •Geotechnical laboratory testing experience/knowledge •Experience in performing geotechnical analyses using software •Project management experience •40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER Training
Physical Demands •Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions on uneven terrain •Will lift equipment and carry laboratory samples which require the ability to lift up to 40 pounds •Office/field work with computer
