Amec Foster Wheeler is currently seeking a Rail Geotechnical Engineer to work with railroad project team based in Nashville, TN covering projects within continental U.S, primarily in the Eastern U.S. Selected candidate is expected to have familiarity with railroad engineering and consulting and perform project assignments with emphasis on railroad infrastructure design and construction. This position requires a seller-doer that provides technical expertise to moderately complex railroad engineering projects, as well as develop business to support the team. Selected candidate will be expected to perform complex analysis and design, including drafting and plan development for railroad construction projects. Project types typically retaining walls, deep foundations, temporary/permanent shoring, ground modifications, staged construction, drainage structures, tunnels, and bridges. Selected candidate will also be expected to assist in plan development for other railroad infrastructure improvements including track alignment design, earthwork, yards, passenger stations, etc. Based on experience, the selected candidate will also serve as a project manager or will work under the general supervision of a project manager and/or team lead.
Key Responsibilities •Uses specialty geotechnical software to analyze bearing capacity, slope stability, soil modulus, shoring, water, deep foundations, etc.; Use of CAD software for design plan development; Shall be primary manager of working design drafting files for design projects; May delegate plan notating, detailing and sheeting tasks to other CAD staff as appropriate, however, must be fully capable to produce a full set design plans on his or her own •The selected candidate will also direct junior staff and CAD staff during the execution of a project and must be able to develop railroad construction plans efficiently and accurately •Expected to travel to, observe, and effectively report site conditions and provide preliminary assessments of a variety of railroad infrastructure conditions (e.g. visit a site and determine likely cause of ongoing slope failure, or develop recommendations for geotechnical exploration); Travel to fairly remote, mountainous areas is periodically required •Able to develop, manage, and implement a geotechnical investigation for railroad infrastructure or roadbed improvement purposes; Must have knowledge or understanding of basic geologic factors for a given locale and their role in developing solutions; Must be able to log soil/rock and assign laboratory testing as appropriate; Must have knowledge of geotechnical laboratory testing, including atterberg limits, sieve analyses, direct shear, tri-axial tests, consolidation tests, unconfined compressive strength, CBR test, and other general tests •Expected to become familiar with other design services offered by Nashville group and provide as-needed design support for projects involving structural or geo-structural, grading, drainage, or facility design •Expected to develop ability to recognize and understand environmental regulations governing various rail or roadbed construction projects; Expected to travel to and attend periodic regulatory meetings in host cities of regulatory agencies •Expected to participate in and provide quality assurance reviews of railroad construction plans •Under supervision of the project manager or senior staff, represents Amec Foster Wheeler and interacts in a professional manner with client and subcontractor representatives while on field assignments •Understands and applies safety requirements in the field •Travel to site locations on frequent basis, estimated at 6-8 business days per month, is required; Overtime and overnight stays are periodically required •Performs other related duties as assigned
Skills / Qualifications •Minimum 10 years of prior related civil engineering or geotechnical analysis/design experience; •Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree a plus •Professional Engineering (PE) licensed •Position requires a candidate to have successfully demonstrated project management experience or is on a project management track •Experience with desktop and industry-specific software including CAD (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation) MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Project •Must have sound written and verbal communication skills •Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships •Ability to communicate clearly with on-site contractors, supervisor or project manager regarding work assignments required •Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
Physical Job Requirements •Ability to stoop, kneel, climb and lift up to 50 pounds •Ability to drive large pick-up truck •Ability to operate field equipment including falling weight devices that require lifting and dropping of 15 pound weights multiple times onto steel rod implements •Close, distance, and peripheral vision; normal auditory function •Must complete employment physical demonstrating ability to meet job requirements, including the ability to wear a respirator, as required •Completion of annual or bi-annual employment physical, if required •Must be able to physically traverse hilly terrain, including distances up to 5 miles while carrying up to 20 pounds of equipment
Work Environment •May require work at remote sites in and around construction equipment, drilling rigs, explosives and environmental contamination or in confined spaces such as tunnels or mines •Some fieldwork may require working with hazardous materials and in hazardous conditions •May be subject to periods of extreme heat and cold and other environmental conditions such as wind as humidity
