The City of Puyallup is seeking qualified applicants for its Traffic Engineer position, a key position in the Office of the City Engineer.
Overview of Position and Community
The City's Traffic Engineer will provide experienced engineering work in the investigation, design, construction, operation and maintenance of traffic control devices. Work involves applying specialized engineering skills and knowledge to a variety of municipal transportation problems.
The City of Puyallup is situated at the foot of Mount Rainier, just east of Tacoma and about 45 minutes south of Seattle. The city has gained prominence as a regional commercial and service center for Pierce County, and has experienced sustained growth in the development of residential, commercial and medical related facilities. The city offers an array of public and recreational services for its 40,500 residents.
Develop plans for transportation facilities and/or traffic control devices.
Supervise and participate in project design and prepare detailed specifications for projects.
Serve as project engineer on construction of special transportation projects.
Supervise inspectors on such projects, and secure compliance with plans and specifications.
Coordinate the inclusion of transportation facilities and features into larger projects with other employees of the Engineering department.
Supervise municipal staff personnel working on the installation, operation, and maintenance of transportation facilities, and traffic control devices.
Systematically review crash records, and review studies for change in traffic control devices and parking controls.
Develop programs for safety improvement and transportation facility efficiency.
Assist in the development of master plans for transportation systems, facilities, and features.
Review traffic impact studies prepared by private developer's engineers and approve appropriate mitigation based on Council adopted policies.
Prepare grants for capacity improvement and hazard elimination projects.
Work closely with the Police Department to correct or improve motoring and parking issues.
Oversee development of traffic control and signal timing plans for large special events.
Review and approve all street closure with the utmost consideration to the motoring public and worker safety.
Work with other municipal departments, or state, federal, or local committees and agencies; prepare public informational programs for distribution.
Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering, and experience in practical traffic engineering projects; or a combination of education, experience, and training that indicates the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position listed above.
Possession of or the ability to obtain prior to appointment a certificate of registration as a Professional Engineer in civil engineering in the State of Washington.
Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license.
