The position includes both professional field and office work related to the management, planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) primarily for streets, drains, and walkways. The successful candidate will be hired as an Assistant or an Associate depending on the level of experience and qualifications.

The Assistant/Associate Engineer is part of the Engineering Services Department and performs the following major duties:
Plans, designs, and inspects civil engineering construction projects.
Reviews construction plans to verify compliance with City, State, Federal, and/or industry standards and requirements for public works infrastructure.
Reviews engineering calculations and participates in pre-design, construction, and utility coordination meetings.
Provides construction administration, public relations, management, and inspection of construction projects.
Reviews and inspects work to preserve public safety and ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
Investigates field problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations.
Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints.
In addition to familiarity with civil engineering principles, procedures, methods, materials and techniques used in public works projects, qualified candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively with the public. Experience with GIS and CAD software programs is highly desirable. An equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related engineering field is required. The Assistant level position requires two years of professional engineering experience and an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate is desirable. The Associate level requires five years of experience and registration as a Professional Engineer.
