Located in scenic southwestern Oregon, Douglas County, (pop. 107,000), is known for its stunningly beautiful landscapes and some of the most amazing outdoor recreational opportunities. The county covers 5,134 square miles and is one of two Oregon counties that extend from the Pacific Ocean to the Cascade Mountain Range. Known for its temperate climate, the county is home to over 50 parks ranging from large facilities with overnight camping, to small boat launching access points, and is often referred to as the “banana belt” of Oregon. The county seat, Roseburg, is conveniently located on Interstate 5, roughly 67 miles south of Eugene and 96 miles north of Medford.
The Public Works Department consists of six divisions, including Administration, Administrative Services, Engineering & Construction, Natural Resources, Operations & Maintenance, and Work Crew. The department is responsible for over 1,200 miles of county-maintained roadway, 306 county-maintained highway bridges, two dams, the county landfill, and 11 transfer stations. The department operates on a budget of $39,669,944 and has 117 FTEs.
Working under the authority and direction of the Board of County Commissioners, the Public Works Director serves as department head, and is responsible for leading the Public Works Department, through subordinate managers and administrative staff, by planning, organizing, and directing all activities related to the management of the department. The Public Works Director provides direct supervision of the management team, indirect supervision to all other staff members, and has final responsibility for all work performed by the Public Works Department.
Education and Experience: Ability to obtain registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Oregon within six months of appointment OR a master’s degree from an accredited college in Business Administration or related field is required. Eight years of experience in a local government top tier management position is required. Candidates may possess any combination of relevant education and experience that demonstrates their ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities.
