POSITION SUMMARY: The chief operating officer position provides the effective leadership, and management necessary to ensure that the company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to accomplish company strategies and initiatives throughout the organization, ensuring financial strength and operating efficiency. The position accomplishes this through a collaborative, constructive and transparent style, guided by the culture and strategic objectives of the company.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Company Vision and Strategy
Provides a key leadership role in all aspects of strategic planning for the company
Provides a key leadership role in monthly continuous strategic planning meetings and strategic processes
Collaborate with leadership teams and others regarding market strategies and associated actions
Ensures new programs are developed, implemented and supported on the operations side in accordance with strategic planning
Provides on-going strategic recommendations to the CEO based on real-time performance metrics, financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis
Provides thought leadership to help the company to achieve key business objectives.
Provides a key leadership role in annual companywide business planning process (focus on growth and profitability)
Review and make recommendations related to strategic investment opportunities. This includes providing development, evaluation, reviews, and guidance regarding strategic investment decisions including potential acquisitions as well as well as strategic partnerships. Support the CEO and leadership team regarding acquisitions and strategic partnerships to ensure full investigation and due diligence throughout the decision-making process. Assist the CEO to acquire any additional outside financial capital/resources required to support the design and implementation of key strategic initiatives.
Assist the CEO in building and nurturing relationships as needed with outside strategic partners that are important to our short term and/or long-term success.
Overall responsibility for the allocation of internal resources (labor) to optimize our future growth potential. This involves making critical strategic choices and difficult short-term and long-term decisions regarding where to invest our resources to achieve company growth goals.
Lead, partner and/or support companywide initiatives. Activity will depend on the initiative.
Collaborate with the CEO to establish policies that support and are consistent with our winning culture dimensions and company vision
Company Leadership and Management
Provide direct leadership and oversight to the Delivery of Services Leadership team and general oversight of the company’s Delivery of Services.
Provide direct leadership and oversight to B&W Field Services
Responsible for setting the direction of quality programs within the company and for quality metrics associated with those
Responsible for oversight of companywide project financials and achieving budgetary goals for the effective multiplier and utilization
Provide direct leadership and oversight to the Safety Manager and general oversight of the company safety programs and initiatives
Collaborate with the leadership teams as needed related to safety programs and initiatives
Manage the performance of the operations functions through data-driven decision-making goal setting, clear communication, knowledge sharing, collaboration, guidance, mentorship and coaching of leadership
Work with the CEO and leadership teams to identify, monitor, adjust the company’s key performance indicators (KPIs), develop project plans to achieve goals, and monitor organization’s performance
Provides a key leadership role in the design and implementation of the business strategies, plans, processes, infrastructure, and effective management practices to achieve both short-term as well as long-term business growth objectives.
Proactively communicate with the CEO as well as the leadership team to keep them informed regarding all critical issues
Collaborate with CEO/HR on pertinent HR company related issues:
annual salary merit raise budgets
staff bonus plan and budgets
review & approval of key personnel merit raises & bonuses
key promotions to management or within management
leadership development and succession planning
recruitment of key personnel
Key involvement with CEO regarding companywide meetings, events and communication
Actively meet and participate with Delivery of Services team
Facilitate Delivery of Services Leadership meetings
Lead monthly COO/Delivery of Services Leadership team meeting
Lead the development of the annual business plan for the Delivery of Services team and BW Field Services
Regular attendance and participation at leadership team meetings
Corporate and joint leadership committee meetings
Preparation, attendance and participation in all board meetings, as needed
Meetings held throughout the year
Support CEO and Finance Leader as it relates to review, monitoring and resolution of claims. Will assist with moving claims towards resolution.
Responsible for implementation of assigned board actions, and support the CEO and leadership team as requested for their assigned board actions.
Lead the Benefits Plan Actions Committee (BPAC) and facilitate all discussions and meetings.
Collaborate with HR and Finance regarding changes to key company benefits that this position is the assigned plan administrator.
Support the CEO in managing subsidiary companies of Bartlett & West as directed.
Oversee the daily operations of the company and the work of senior leadership to ensure we are aligned with the dimensions of our culture and focused on achieving company goals.
Review companywide annual staffing plans; participate in decisions regarding direction of staffing and changes to staffing
Engage leadership committees on issues, trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery; seek continuous improvement
Ensure financial and other agreed targets/KPIs are met/exceeded within the Delivery of Services team
Collaborate with the CEO to strengthen and reinforce our culture through the clear alignment of our goals with committee, work group, and individual accountabilities.
Provide coaching and professional development opportunities to all direct reports
Responsible for compensation recommendations
Conduct annual 1:1 manager meetings with designees throughout the company

Minimum of 15 years’ experience in progressively advanced positions; 5 years’ minimum experience in senior level management position. Skilled in organizational development, personnel management, budget and resource development, and strategic planning. Demonstrated experience in financial planning and analysis.
Bachelor’s degree required; preferred in business, finance, engineering; master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated ongoing professional development as well.
