This is a technical position for research and extension in the area of mechatronics, UAVs, precision agriculture, machine vision, and robotics. The incumbent will assist in the development of automated and robotic systems for agricultural applications, assist in designing and implementing research studies, collect and analyze data, assist in the development and implementation of management plans for agricultural and biological engineering, carry out field and laboratory experiments, assist and/or co-write technical reports and scientific publications, and contribute to the education of graduate students/post-docs. The responsibilities will include developing educational materials and assisting with field demonstrations. He/she will be expected to accept responsibilities with minimum supervision and should set priorities and schedule efficiently for him/herself as well as the field staff and to some extent graduate students and post-doctoral associate(s) for field activities.
Duties/Responsibilities Include: •Assist in the design, development, implementation, testing, evaluation and maintenance of precision farming technologies/systems/machines. Assist in the design and development of Wireless Sensor Network, smart and automated systems (e.g. irrigation system, in-field data collection system), machine vision systems (e.g. for plant disease detection, yield estimation, fruit maturity detection etc.), equipment/machines (e.g. mechanical harvester, mechanical pruner) •Coordination of data collection and field activities. Supervision of field assistants/technicians and other project staff. In some instances, collection of data when qualified staff are not available. •Data analysis, including geospatial analyses and report writing for precision farming projects and associated multi-disciplinary projects; development of automation tools (including cloud-, web-based and mobile Apps) •Delivery of precision farming technologies, UAV, automation and smart machines extension programs in conjunction with the specialist and represent the SWFREC program at state, federal, and international meetings. •Assist in writing refereed and non-refereed research and extension papers. •Purchase equipment and supplies, and assist in the supervision of infrastructure construction related to engineering projects led by the supervising professor. •Assist in exploring research funding and co-development of research funding proposals (includes obtaining quotes and helping to prepare proposal budgets). •Co-supervision of graduate students and post-doctoral associates for field research. •Perform related work as required.
Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area; Master's degree preferred.
Preferred Qualifications: Electrical and Computer Engineering or closely related field (mechatronics, IoT, machine vision)
Previous experience and publications in areas of UAVs, machine vision, remote sensing, IoT, and precision farming technologies .
Experience in project management
Knowledge of computer programming (embedded programming, C, Matlab etc.)
Knowledge and experience in use of GIS tools for natural systems
Knowledge of internet programing (e.g. HTML, JAVA script) for developing web-based decision support systems
Background in agricultural engineering
Experience in instrumentation and electronics
Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in research, analysis or testing
Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis Knowledge of the methods of data collection
Ability to assist in the development of research projects in conjunction with faculty and other staff
Ability to perform statistical analysis using statistical software’s (e.g. SAS/Minitab)
Ability to develop educational materials for agricultural water conservation and quality program
Ability to prepare written reports for research findings in coordination with faculty
Ability to install, maintain and operate field and laboratory equipment
Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Presently, SWFREC supports thirteen faculty programs and a staff of more than 70 people. Active research programs in vegetable production, water management, crop nutrition, pest management, plant pathology, plant physiology, citrus pathology, soil microbiology, weed science, precision agricultural engineering, agricultural economics, and citrus horticulture occur on 320 acres of research facilities at SWFREC, including approximately 60 acres of citrus groves. The faculty and staff of SWFREC serve a vibrant commercial agricultural region. Agricultural enterprises in citrus, beef cattle, vegetables, and sugarcane collectively produce more than $800 million of annual sales. Presently there are about 125,000 acres of citrus produced in the five-county southwest region surrounding the Center.
