Wood currently has an opportunity available for an Entry to Mid-Level Environmental Geologist to join our Topeka, Kansas team.
This is a full time position. Hours may vary depending on work load and will require overtime. This individual will be approximately 70% in the field, primarily on industrial sites, and 30% in the office.
Will work under the supervision of a Senior Scientist and/or Project Manager
Field activities include soil borings, groundwater monitoring well installations, collecting soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment samples as well as documenting field activities
Office activities include compilation, management, some interpretation of hydrogeologic data, and analytical results
Will prepare tables and figures using analytical data and topographic/site maps, and assist in preparation of technical reports, with increasing responsibilities in this area
Will work with Excel spreadsheets and may perform statistical analysis of data and other routine scientific calculations
Researches literature and regulatory requirements may help prepare permit applications and regulatory compliance reports (such as Discharge Monitoring Reports)
Follows company safety standards, prepares site-specific Health and Safety Plans and Job Hazard Analyses
Contacts and coordinates with subcontractors and sets up POs through internal purchasing system
Our professionals work on many projects at one time and must have the ability to multi-task.
Maintaining successful client relations is a must
Travel to project sites primarily throughout Kansas and occasionally to surrounding states - Approximately 40% overnight travel
Skills / Qualifications
BS in Geology preferred. Related technical degree may also be acceptable
4+ years of solid field work experience (soil borings, well installations, multi-media sampling)
Must be a self-starter with leadership qualities; capable of reviewing, interpreting and following plans and providing direction to subcontractors
Must be capable of working independently with strong time management and organizational skills
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong computer skills for database work and proficiency in MS Office
Flexible to work outside normal business hours as required
Ability and willingness to travel to project sites primarily throughout Kansas and occasionally to surrounding states - Approximately 40% overnight travel
Must pass drug test, physical, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company's driving (MVR) policy
40-Hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations Training
Previous mapping experience using aerial photos, field dimensioning and sketches, and hand-held GPS a plus
Previous data management experience a plus
Experience in due diligence/Phase I ESAs and/or industrial compliance a plus
Working knowledge of Access, AutoCAD and/or GIS is preferable
Field activities may require working in unfavorable weather conditions
Field activities may require working in specialized protective equipment supplied by employer; Candidate must be physically capable of performing tasks in such equipment
Will lift equipment and carry coolers with laboratory samples, requiring the ability to lift 40 pounds without straining
