RSG is seeking a Junior Technical Transportation Planner to join the Burlington, Vermont office of our growing Transportation Planning and Engineering Practice.
AS A JUNIOR TECHNICAL TRANSPORTATION PLANNER
You have a keen interest in data and the technical side of transportation planning and operations. You are a Civil & Environmental Engineer or an Urban & Regional Planning professional with a strong interest in transportation and analytics. You work closely with RSG’s transportation planning and engineering staff on a variety of project responsibilities, such as collecting, managing and analyzing traffic data, maintaining and operating data collection equipment, overseeing support staff, compiling and reviewing data, conducting surveys, coding models, writing reports and technical memos, as well as creating visuals for reports and presentations. Your work supports the transportation master plans, traffic operations, transportation corridor studies, feasibility studies, microsimulation modeling, safety analysis, and traffic impact studies performed by group members.
As a member of the Transportation Planning and Engineering practice you are comfortable working in the field, conducting site visits, operating equipment and coordinating logistics related to field work for safety and traffic projects. You have knowledge of fundamental transportation engineering concepts and resources (e.g. Highway Capacity Manual, Trip Generation, Parking Generation, NACTO, etc.) You are excited to apply innovative transportation planning approaches such as computer programming and big data, using an array of software tools. You enjoy working in a team environment and can communicate technical materials to technical and non-technical audiences. You work with others on the RSG team to produce accurate, thorough, and attractive technical results.
You are a self-starter with a wide variety of interests in the field of transportation planning, engineering, and analysis. You are a strategic thinker who is also adept at producing highly technical, precise details on a project.
While based in Vermont, our team works nationally. A willingness to work virtually with geographically dispersed teammates is a necessity. Ability to travel is a plus.
THESE QUALIFICATIONS ARE ESSENTIAL
BA or BS in planning, engineering, or related field of study
Knowledge of fundamental transportation engineering concepts
Demonstrated skills and interest in technical transportation analysis
Ability to write clearly in a variety of communication formats and styles (e.g. email, technical documentation, progress updates, instructions, recommendations, reports and presentations)
Effective in a variety of presentation settings: one-to-one, small and large groups, with peers, supervisors and clients.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS ARE DESIRABLE
Engineer in Training/Engineer Intern (EIT/EI) certification and/or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification
Master’s Degree in planning, engineering, or related field
1-3 years experience working on transportation planning and/or transportation engineering projects
Completion of introductory transportation engineering coursework such as geometric design of highways, traffic engineering, urban transportation planning, micro-simulation, travel demand modeling, safety, or site planning
Proficiency in ArcGIS
Experience in Python coding, use of R software, PowerBI, and or Excel
Experience using traffic analysis and modeling packages such as Synchro/SimTraffic, Vissim
Experience using CAD software packages including AutoCAD and MicroStation
Experience using SurveyMonkey and SurveyGizmo
Ability to work in Adobe InDesgin and Illustrator
