This position applies superior customer service skills and professional engineering and construction knowledge to manage, design and administer civil/municipal engineering projects, assist internal and external customers, review/prepare engineering plans and contracts, conduct construction inspection in the field, and train and lead others. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of the Public Works Manager - Engineering. This position requires exercise of considerable professional judgment and initiative, the ability to participate in public meetings by presenting and/or supporting Public Works projects, and directing consultant engineers regarding the preparation of studies, plans and specifications and construction inspection on municipal-sponsored Public Works projects/programs. This position is typically expected to perform generalized engineering work and project management functions and oversee construction projects in the field during summer months.
Strong leadership and project management skills to effectively and efficiently organize, direct, and coordinate projects, personnel, and equipment are a must. This position requires thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, laws, ordinances, statues, and regulatory requirements for IDOT, KDOT, MFT, IEPA, etc. Effective skills in written and verbal communication, negotiating, public speaking, consulting, report writing, editing of written materials, interpretation and analysis of technical and statistical information, and proficiency with software programs such as Microstation CADD or AutoCAD, GIS, Windows, Word, Excel are also required.
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction engineering; a minimum of five years of civil engineering experience, with three years of experience managing various design and construction projects. Previous construction inspection experience is required, with surveying experience preferred. Professional Engineering license is preferred, or the ability to obtain within two years of commencing employment. IDOT Documentation Certified or the receipt of such within twelve (12) months of commencing employment will also be required. Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs.
