As a Bridge Inspection Engineer, you will inspect structures and review, compile and submit inspection reports; perform load rating analyses; assess bridge plans and sketches to determine mathematical models for bridge analysis for calculating load ratings; perform quality control and quality assurance inspections; review inspection reports, respond to emergencies and assess structure damage resulting from vehicular or vessel impact or natural disaster; and document recommendations for repairs and rehabilitations. This position requires physically demanding labor over, in and around water from boats, bucket trucks and ladders at various heights and in harsh weather conditions. Frequent climbing, crawling, stooping, working in confined spaces and traversing embankments is required. Ladder and bucket truck regulations have a weight restriction of 300 lbs which includes tools and equipment. VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore, you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations. Demonstrated experience in the design, inspection and maintenance of bridges and structures, including knowledge of methods and materials. Ability to perform quality assurance and quality control inspection reviews and manage consultant inspection contracts. Ability to prepare, review and maintain inspection records and reports and communicate structure condition and recommendations for repair, rehabilitation and replacement activities. Ability to perform hands-on safety inspections, work out of doors in all types of weather; at great heights and in confined spaces. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, as well as establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers. Skill in the use of computers and software applications including applications for structural design and analysis. Valid driver’s license.
Preferred qualifications include BSCE with an emphasis in structural engineering. Five years of bridge inspection experience or be approved team leader as specified by FHWA. Proficient in MS Office and CAD. |
