THE POSITION: Under direction, is responsible for the design, bidding, and monitoring of traffic signals, signal communication systems, signs, road markings and other strategies to ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic on City streets. Review proposed developments for traffic impact and determine the need for traffic control devices and related requirements to be installed by the project. Participates in and is in charge of varied and difficult professional engineering work of the more advance level including research and design of engineering projects; and performs other work as required.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Develops plans for major civil/traffic engineering projects, including supervision in the drawing of plans, writing specifications, making preliminary construction plan layouts; makes a variety of decisions requiring technical and professional knowledge of engineering principles, methods and techniques; and inspects construction work in progress and on completion. Responds to inquiries from the public concerning various traffic engineering related issues.
Graduated from college with a degree in Civil Engineering AND
Three (3) years of responsible professional civil engineering experience, including professional experience in municipal public works projects, OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described duties.
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers is required. A copy of the California State Board certificate of registration must be turned in with the Application and Resume in order for the application to be accepted.
OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge of: The principles and practices of civil and traffic engineering; considerable knowledge of modern methods and techniques applies to the design and construction of various projects; good knowledge of the strength, properties, and uses of construction materials; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques and public relations. Ability to: Perform technical research work and provide supervision, and advice on difficult engineering problems; ability to develop accurate drawings and maps and to prepare technical reports; ability to make difficult mathematical calculations and keep neat and accurate notes. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, developers, property owners and the public.
EXAMINATION (WEIGHTED: 100%)
The method of examination may include one or more of the following: written exam; oral exam; evaluation of education, training, experience or other qualifications as shown by the application; or by other information submitted; or by the record; questionnaires submitted to references; or any other appropriate measure of fitness. A minimum passing score of 70% is required. NOTE: Admission to the Examination(s) may be limited to those applicants who demonstrate the best combination of qualifications. Applicants possessing the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed admittance to the Examination.
